About macaws

Macaws are among the most striking and intelligent birds in the world. These large, vividly colored parrots are native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Their vibrant feathers, impressive wingspans, and remarkable vocal abilities make them one of nature’s most fascinating creatures. However, their beauty is not just skin deep—macaws possess extraordinary intelligence, strong social bonds, and remarkable adaptability, making them a true marvel of the avian world.

We were lucky enough to see both scarlet and green macaws on our visit to Costa Rica. I had visions of having to hike into the forest, sprinkled with a bit of luck, but two flew past the bus we were on, as we went down a pretty busy road. Not so romantic, but thrilling none the less. I have tried to capture that thrill in this watercolour on canvas painting.

Macaws are not just symbols of nature’s brilliance; they are living proof of the importance of biodiversity. Their intelligence, beauty, and social complexity inspire admiration and serve as a reminder of why protecting wildlife is so essential. By supporting conservation initiatives and responsible pet ownership, we can help ensure that future generations continue to marvel at these extraordinary birds.

Beyond their physical characteristics, macaws are incredibly intelligent. Their cognitive abilities rival those of primates, and they are capable of problem-solving, tool use, and even a basic understanding of cause and effect. Many macaws can learn to mimic human speech, not just repeating words but sometimes using them in context. Their ability to form deep social bonds is another testament to their intelligence. In the wild, macaws mate for life and show strong loyalty to their partners, engaging in mutual grooming and synchronized flying. They also live in flocks, communicating through a range of vocalizations and body language.

Despite their incredible adaptability, macaws face significant threats, primarily due to habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trade. Many species, including the majestic Hyacinth Macaw, the largest of all parrots, are now endangered. Conservation efforts, including habitat protection and breeding programs, are crucial to ensuring their survival.

Macaws are brilliant

One of the most distinctive features of macaws is their brilliant plumage, which ranges from the fiery reds and blues of the scarlet macaw to the golden-yellow and green hues of the blue-and-yellow macaw. Their striking colors serve as camouflage in their natural habitat, blending in with the bright fruits, flowers, and dense foliage of the rainforest.

In addition to their visual splendor, macaws are also known for their large, powerful beaks, which help them crack open tough nuts and seeds, a crucial part of their diet. Their beaks are so strong that they can easily crush a Brazil nut—one of the hardest nuts in the world. One of my favourite macaw facts is that they have a bone in their tongue.

About the painting

I have tried to capture the beauty, strength and intelligence of the macaw in this painting, starting first with flowing watercolours and then adding metal leaf to bring a striking glow to the work. I am grateful to Dr Andrew Melhuish who allowed me to use his brilliant photos as reference. It is 80×80 cm on a deep edge canvas so that it can be hung unframed. If you preference is for a framed work, I think that a tray frame really sets off the image.

The painting is protected with multiple layers of lacquer to both protect the metal from tarnishing and to protect the watercolours from accidental damage. This high-quality lacquer dries to a hard, crystal clear high gloss finish. It has been used in temples all over Thailand to protect their metal and gold leaf.

Buy with confidence

I know that buying a painting which will be with you for years, is a considered decision and it can be hard if you have not seen the piece in person. I want you to be delighted with your painting and for it to bring you a smile and inject energy into your day for years to come.

Photographing gold in particular can be tricky because of reflections, so please take this into account.

If you live locally, I am happy for you to visit my studio to see it in person, or to try it in your home for a few days. If you purchase it and I ship it to you, and you are not happy when it arrives (to be fair, most people say paintings are even better in the flesh!), then as long as you return it to me undamaged I will refund you the price of the painting (you will need to pay shipping and let me know within a week).

I hope this allows you to buy with confidence.

Shipping

I am happy to ship both within the UK and outside. If you do not live in the UK please get in touch so I can give you a shipping cost. Please note that there may be import duties or taxes applicable in your country (there aren’t in the USA, Canada or Australia on original art), but I will check those for you wherever possible.

So let’s end on a traditional story:

“In the heart of the Amazon, a storm raged—fierce, unrelenting. When the winds calmed, a small tribe found themselves lost, swallowed by the endless green. Days passed. Hunger and doubt crept in. The jungle, once their home, now felt like a maze with no end. Then, like a dream, it appeared—the Scarlet Macaw. Its feathers shimmered with every color of the sky, glowing where the sunlight touched. With each beat of its wings, it revealed the way. The tribe followed, step by step, hope flickering back into their hearts until they reached a clearing and were saved.

Hope is never truly lost. Sometimes, all we need is a guiding light—if only we dare to follow it.
