About

Create paintings with the bold character of a woodcut, combined with luminous delicate colour.

This unusual technique brings strong, expressive ink together with delicate colour to create paintings full of contrast, texture and atmosphere. The final wash-off stage adds an exciting element of surprise as your image is revealed.

You’ll be guided through the ink resist (gouache wash-off) technique step by step. It may sound mysterious, but once you’ve seen how it works, it’s surprisingly straightforward — and great fun. It’s a technique I rarely see taught elsewhere in the UK and one that produces wonderfully distinctive results.

We’ll start with a simple subject so you can enjoy discovering the process, before having the opportunity to create a painting from a subject of your own. I’ve used the technique for landscapes, animals, birds and portraits.

And because there’s a fair bit of washing and splashing involved, we take this part of the process outside in the summer!

No previous experience is needed — just come ready to experiment and enjoy trying something completely different.

The workshop takes place at beautiful Micklems Farm in Knowl Hill, Berkshire, a relaxed and welcoming setting for a day of painting.
