I’ve been wanting to paint pigeons for ages. Why? The moment people describe them as rats with wings, I start seeing the beautiful colours and iridescent feathers. The canvas is 30×100 and prepped with watercolour ground. A light sketch, is the first step and then I painted the birds with Indian ink. I used salt to break up the piment and a little pigment pen where I needed detail.
Once dry, I added a little crackle paste, then used washes of watercolour. Finally I used gold size and applied silver leaf. A little ink was used to mellow the silver down a little. Everything was then sealed with metal lacquer.
Who said pigeons aren’t beautiful?
