This beautiful golden doe is part of a small collection of running animals, inspired by my love of movement and the moment of awe when you manage to spot one in the distance. We were driving recently when three ‘boinged’ out in front of us. I managed to stop and enjoy the sight of their white rumps disappearing.
Roe deer are medium-sized, standing about 66–86 cm at the shoulder with a small, short-tailed body; bucks have short three-tined antlers and the coat is reddish-brown in summer fading to gray-brown in winter, with a conspicuous white rump patch, and they are mostly solitary or in small groups, feeding on buds and leaves and occupying forest edges and mixed habitats. They actually look like they have no tail when they are running, which is odd and their white patch is like an upside down heart.
The painting is 30x60cm on a thin edged canvas. It is painted in ink and watercolour and then finished with imitation gold leaf. The painting has been sealed with UV protective varnish and it is framed in a handmade wooden float frame to help it stand out. It is strung and ready to hang. I am able to frame in a natural wood, black or white frame of your choice.
