Golden grebes

Great Crested Grebes 50x50cm ink, watercolour and metal leaf on birch panel in a matte black frame

What is better than seeing two Great Crested Grebes courting each other on a lake or river? On land they are clumsy because their feet are placed so far back on their bodies, but on the water they are dancers of exceptional beauty. They have an elaborate courtship display in which they rise out of the water and shake their heads and they offer each other presents of weed. Their stripey babies often ride on their parents’ backs.

This painting is a celebration of these stunning birds, in ink, watercolour and metal leaf. Capturing their courtship and elegance, with their crazy hair dos.
