A joyful, expressive mixed-media painting celebrating the elephant as a symbol of strength, good fortune and positive energy.
Shown in profile with its trunk raised high, this elephant has an unmistakable air of optimism and celebration. In many cultures, an elephant with its trunk held upwards is associated with good luck, prosperity and abundance. The raised trunk can also be seen as a welcoming gesture — gathering in positive energy and all the good things life has to offer.
The elephant itself is painted in delicate layers of watercolour, allowing the character and texture of the animal to emerge with a soft, luminous quality. An opaque acrylic background provides a bold contrast, with energetic mark-making in ink and acrylic adding movement, texture and a contemporary feel to the piece.
I wanted the painting to capture that wonderful sense of lifting your head, welcoming what is to come and making space for positive things — while retaining the strength and quiet dignity that makes elephants such captivating subjects.
This is an original mixed-media artwork on deep-edge canvas, measuring 60 x 80 cm.
